Going to see the Faint tonight was one of the strangest experiences ever. Despite being an 18+ show, I felt like the oldest person there. It might be in part due to having stood in front with Stephanie, hiding from all the hubbub around me. It was a Camel sponsored event. On the one hand I can't complain. I spent $12 on the show, then received two free packs of cigarettes, so really I paid four or five dollars. However, it was bizarre and garish. There were showgirls (low rent strippers) and a guy in a Vegased-out Captain Kangaroo get up, a foul comedian, and a Neil Diamond cover band filling most of my time there.
There were the loud, drunk, and thuggish in attendance, the worst of whom were a couple complaining about the other bands on the "Omaha" label, like "The Cursive." They thought they were clever for shouting "Omaha!!" (again thinking it was their record label) at the start of their set. The ensuing dance party resembled a mosh pit too much at times to be completely enjoyable. However, I did shake my ass. I did have some fun. It's embarrassing, really, seeing them for the first time now, especially when I could have seen them free a few years ago. Before the tours with No Doubt; before the Camel sponsorship.
All told it was a well-spent $12-8(for cigarettes)=$4. I might just arrive a little later if there is ever an event touted as Camel Presents Sin City again.
Also, it is not about 1 a.m., and I have no desire to go to bed. If only I could be lazy and miss my 9:30 class tomorrow.
Good night.

As an Omaha native, I weep. But I won't go to faint shows anymore b/c they are horrid. I can't believe you didn't go all the times they were free in madison!!

I can't believe I missed them, either. I was actually at one show at Club 770, but my friends left early and so did I. Actually if I remember correctly Jake was one of them.

I also am trying to imagine how different the show must have been compared to when I saw Morrissey, when he requested that the ballroom to be smoke free...there was a smoking room on another floor, and that was like being in a suffocation chamber...
if you can't already tell, I've never been a smoker, and I'm not a fan of the secondhand smoke...
and if you have any strong desire to quit smoking, I say go for it!
